This is How it Looks to Be Blessed - Part 2

“Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands.” Psalm 112:1

Let’s take another look at The Blessed man described in Psalm 112.  Previously, we discussed:

1. The blessed man honors the Lord and delights in His commands.  He puts God first place in His life. Verse 1

2. The blessed man’s children are strong and blessed among their generation or peers.  Verse 2

3.  The blessed man is both wealthy and righteous.  Verse 3

This fallen world is a dark place.  We can be bombarded with distressing, sorrowful  reports on a daily basis. So how does that affect the blessed man?  How does he fare in the midst of great darkness?  According to verse 4 of Psalm 112, “Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.” Notice the traits listed for the blessed (empowered to succeed) man: upright, gracious, compassionate and righteous.  If you look closely at these words they are synonymous with the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22 – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.

Maybe you are looking over that list of attributes thinking, “I don’t have all of those in my life.”  To that I would say, “Yes you do.”  The fruit of the Spirit is deposited in us at salvation. All of them.  But, they are in seed form.  It is up to you and me to water and grow those to full maturity. Spiritual growth and development takes place much like physical growth and development; by exercise and usage.  If you choose to put a perfectly healthy arm in a sling and not use it, it will become useless and weak over time.

Just as your physical muscles develop with exercise and usage, your spiritual self will also develop with exercise or usage. If you are weak in the area of patience, practice or exercise patience daily and watch the development of patience in your life.  If you are weak in the area of joy, determine make it a habit to think joyful thoughts and speak words of joy and thanksgiving throughout your day.

Scripture Meditation: Psalm 1:1-6

The Chapel e-letter is written by John and Gwen Miller to encourage believers in their faith walk.

1 Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,

who finds great delight in his commands.

2 His children will be mighty in the land;

the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house,

and his righteousness endures forever.

4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,

for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.

5 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely,

who conducts his affairs with justice.

6 Surely he will never be shaken;

a righteous man will be remembered forever.

7 He will have no fear of bad news;

his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

8 His heart is secure, he will have no fear;

in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.

9 He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor,

his righteousness endures forever;

his horn will be lifted high in honor.

10 The wicked man will see and be vexed,

he will gnash his teeth and waste away;

the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.
